when retailer gives you lemons

you certainly need to know that 'Lemon Laws' is put into effect from 1st september 2012 in singapore

'Lemon Laws' refer to consumer protection laws that provide remedies for consumers against defective goods, colloquially known as “lemons”, within 6 months of delivery.  These are goods that fail to meet standards of quality and performance, even after repeated repair.

interestingly, perishables, consumables, second-hand goods, and discounted goods are also covered! except..real property and rental/leased goods!

this mean under the existing law, consumer is entitled to have retailer repair the goods or even reject the goods and obtain a refund when they are not of satisfactory quality at the time of delivery. basically, retailer may offer to repair or replace the rejected goods, or offer full refund if the item has never worked (beware: the refund amount may be reduced to take into account the use that the consumer has had of the goods; which i think it is fair to retailer).

depends on which sides you are at, but i believe the implementation of lemon laws will ensure goods sold match their description or are fit for purpose. i wonder if it applies to pirated DVDs :D

white picnic

Image is the courtesy of Diner en Blanc - Singapore

although characterized by a hot and humid climate, singapore was 'chosen' to be the very first country in asia to host diner en blanc (i'm saying this because it was bloody hot!!!). nearly 900 turned up last evening, and it was be fun and exciting! i must admit it was quite a hassle to set-up the whole thing (carrying chairs, table, dishes, utensils, food, drink, etc). not to mention carrying it to the location. but after we settled down and started chatting with random people, flagging napkins, lighting up sparklers, many cheers, and good music to dance with, it was actually worth all the hassles.

carry your lunch in style

fashion is crazy. $360 for the paper material (yes, coated paper!) and $780 for leather jil sander lunch bag. the thing about fashion is, when people buy the idea of its quirkiness, it just sells. and yes, the leather version is sold out in popular e-store mr porter. i need lunch bag. remind me to keep the paper bag when i do take away from mcdonald's or burger king. i just need to roll the top.

pretty + sexy + funny

one of the funniest women that i adore! modern family would have not been that funny if it was not for her. everyone, here you go: SOFIA VERGARA, please love her! and i enjoy her colombian accent way better than colombian coffee.

Sofía Margarita Vergara Vergara (born July 10, 1972) is a Colombian actress, comedian, television hostess and model.  Vergara had been widely known for co-hosting two television shows for Univisión in the late 1990s. Her television career opened up for her a window of exposure to North American audiences prior to her first notable acting job in English, the 2003 film Chasing Papi. Subsequently, she appeared in films, including two Tyler Perry films, Meet the Browns (2008) and Madea Goes to Jail (2009), receiving an ALMA Award nomination for the latter. Vergara's success on television has earned her roles in recent films, The Smurfs (2011), New Year's Eve (2011), Happy Feet Two (2011) and The Three Stooges (2012).

As of 2012 Vergara stars on the ABC series Modern Family as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, for which she was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Comedy Actress.

chapter revisited!

My recent acquaintance with one of Singapore’s award winning children storybook writers brought me back to one of the many chapters in my life: the task specific focal dystonia (writer’s cramp). It is basically a neurological condition that affects a muscle or group of muscles in a specific part of the body causing involuntary muscular contractions and abnormal postures, this in particular causes a cramp or spasm affecting certain muscles of the hand and/or fingers when you attempt to write.

She brought with her her book, sort of her short biography which focuses on her battle with spasmodic dysphonia (SD) [a voice disorder characterized by involuntary movements or spasms of one or more muscles of the larynx during speech]. She said to me since she brought it, she gave it to me as a gift. Thanking her, I didn’t give much thought about it (as I did not know that the book was about her battle with dysphonia). But I read it later the following night and glad that I did.

Although dystonia and dysphonia basically pose different conditions, I could find many similarities regarding the frustration in discovering, accepting, and dealing with this rare disease, which cause is yet known to date. Imagine your brain sending instructions to your muscle group to do something but they do not listen to you; it is just too unfortunate that it is biologically impossible for us to change our body parts as and when we need/like, we are basically stuck with a stubborn muscle group who practically refuse to work under our control. Yes yes, I have writer’s cramp, struck me 12 years ago.

My point is, many people who suffers dystonia/dysphonia share their stories online, but this is basically my first time ever knowing someone in person who actually have the (almost) same condition. To be able to share our stories, I feel somehow, glad. Maybe it is difficult for anyone else to understand, but as I said, dystonia is a very rare disease, so finding your  ‘friend’ in person is not as easy as you think it is. Though I once met a boy at his late teens (one day during my visit to the neurologist and he asked me to stay and meet someone whose dystonia had developed into wilson’s disease). The boy, could control nothing else but his eyeballs.

I looked at him, dumbfounded, and said to myself, “damn, I thought I had a frightening condition, but it pales in comparison with the boy’s suffering.” My neurologist discharged me and said while giving me 2 taps on my shoulder, “You’re lucky.”

I smiled, nodded, and said, “I know. Thank you.”

life as i know it

I used to write down my wish list, and wished for it before the new year kicked in or before the birthday cake’s candle burnt out. Gone are those days when I bother so much about new year’s resolutions. Gone are those days when I was being so hopeful about how a birthday candle might twist the fate and grant all my wishes. Let’s face it. It’s good to have a dream, but I have decided to be kinder to myself and not to blame myself during December period for having a bunch of uncompleted/unfulfilled new year’s resolutions.

Hones
tly, I am quite tired of my current point. I have no end and growing worries. I feel lonely amidst the crowd. Sometimes disconnected. I really need some excitement. A change (not sex change though). 2011 was certainly not a good year to me, if not worst. But, after giving it some thought, we will never appreciate sugar if we have never tasted the lemon, right? I’ve gone through many rocky rides and believe me, there will always be ways out. I think universe has its way in dealing with issues.

So, turning 29, I wish for more wisdom, and huge chunk of lucks and fortunes. I guess, it is just as simple as that. Happy birthday to me.

congratulations

to one of the many women i admire, for winning Best Designer Brand prize at the 2011 British Fashion Awards. starting as an unnoticed singer from spice girls, she has made name for herself and not just another footballer's wife. i quite like her, i think she is hilarious and not as boring as what people think she is.

the eye care expert

i was unhappily brushing my shirts (before tossing them to washing machine) when i hurled the liquid detergent bottle onto the floor. it SQUIRT-ed on me and took aim really well at my eyes. i called GOD because of the throbbing pain. you know how our eyes are so smart that they alert you on contact with foreign objects through pain and then blink or close your eyes. i had to forcefully open my eyes using my fingers and washed them with tap water, cold water, optrex, eye-drops, again and again. i was literally half blind. i immediately went to hibernate mode, hoping that i could sleep the pain and potential risk through. smart, no?! i woke up at 4+am testing if my eyes were alright and if i could still see. i could! afterwards I just went back to sleep.

my eyes are dirt free, sparkling, and cleansed now, all thanks to 'breeze color care'!
